Cancelation Proration: Refund and Forfeit Prorated Amount Example

The following example demonstrates a prorated forfeiture due to a product offer cancelation.

  • Billing Cycle — Monthly
  • Granular Unit — Days
  • Number of Days in the Current Cycle — 30
  • Recurring Charge — €100
  • Recurring Grant — 1000 prepaid minutes
  • Cancelation Time — 10 Days into the cycle
  • Number of Days Owned — 10 of 30
  • Charge Amount Refunded — €66.67:

    €100 × (10 ÷ 30) = €33.33

    €100 – €33.33 = €66.67

  • Granted Amount Forfeited — 666.67 Minutes:

    1000 × (10 ÷ 30) = 333 Minutes

    1000 – 333 = 666.67 Minutes Forfeited

Subscribers are not penalized if they used more than their prorated portion of the asset. In addition, if they did not use the prorated amount of assets, the remainder of the asset is still available for use. In this case, the associated product offer is no longer valid so they must own another product offer that uses the same asset balance.

Note:
  • If a product offer with scaled proration includes a discount, the discount is prorated during purchase or cancelation processing. Both absolute amounts and percentage discounts are applied as an appropriate percentage of the charge. For example, if a €500 charge is prorated so only €200 is applied to a balance, and the product offer contains a 10% discount, the prorated charge amount of €200 would result in a discounted charge of €180 that gets applied. If the discount is an absolute €50 amount for the billing cycle, it is prorated using the same percentage as the charge (40% of €500=€200), for a discount of €20 (40% of €50), which results in the same discounted charge of €180.
  • Prorated refunds that occur during cancelations are applied to cancelation fees if they exist.
