Session Management — Gx Policy

You can configure a product offer so that charging policy components are applied only when quota is authorized or only when it is denied.

After receiving a Gx CCA-I, PCC rules are evaluated and selected. However, if the Gy session requires that a new policy profile is used because a different product offer was selected, a Gx RAR message is sent to the P-GW if there are changes to the PCC rules based on rating. If the applied product offer changes during a session, Gx policies are re-evaluated after responding to subsequent Gy CCR messages that result in an authorization status change (from authorized to denied or from denied to authorized).

A Gx policy change RAR is sent when the availability of quota changes and impacts the Gy session. When quota is denied in a Gy session, PCC rules might be sent to the P-GW that result in a notification to the subscriber to enable more quota. If additional quota is granted, another Gx RAR is sent to update the PCC rules. You can configure MATRIXX Engine to apply the data and policy changes for the subscription after the next Gy CCR-U is received or you can enable immediate Gx notifications on offer selection changes due to offer purchases and cancelations.

Policy Profile Selection

To configure policy processing when quota is authorized/denied, MATRIXX Support recommends that you create multiple product offers with different priorities and a default offer.
  • Create a default offer that is a global offer with a policy component only set to the lowest priority. As a global offer, you do not have to create an offer for every subscriber.
Important: When setting the Policy Quota Action Type:
    • Do not set this on the default offer. This offer is used at the start of a session and when no other offer is in use.
    • If it is unset in one or more other selected offers, it is possible that multiple RARs will be sent that are unrelated to authorizations.
    • If it is set on every offer, the CCR will fail.
  • Create an active subscription offer with usage and policy components. The offer priority should be higher than the default offer priority.

The examples in the following sections apply when the Policy Quota Action Type is Only Apply Policy When Quota Authorized. The message flows would be similar if the Policy Quota Action Type was Only Apply Policy When Quota Denied.
