3G/4G Policy Overview
The 3G/4G MATRIXX Policy Application provides the business logic to support real-time policy decisions and rules. It allows charging and network quality of service (QoS) to be flexibly and dynamically linked to customer, service, and network parameters.
Session Management Policy — Gx Sessions
MATRIXX Engine includes MATRIXX Charging Application, which is a Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF), which communicates with an external Policy and Charging Enforcement Function (PCEF) using the Gx reference point.
Rx Application Sessions
The MATRIXX Policy Application Rx interface gathers data from an external Application Function (AF), and uses it to construct and publish PCC and QoS rules over the Gx interface to an external Policy and Charging Enforcement Function (PCEF).
Rx Session Custom Bandwidth
You can normalize on Rx AAR messages when selecting Gx policy profiles to customize QoS Information values such as bandwidth.

- About MATRIXX Policy
  MATRIXX Policy describes the tasks that must be completed to configure MATRIXX Policy Application functionality and provides overviews, recommendations, and conceptual discussions to help you understand these tasks. In addition, it describes the supported Diameter policy AVPs and MATRIXX Policy Application SubMan APIs.
- 5G Policy Overview
  The MATRIXX Policy Application provides the business logic and integration into a third-party Policy Control Function (PCF) to support real-time policy decisions and rules. It enables your PCF to deliver flexible policy and charging control rules to your 5G network.

  - Gy Sessions
    The policy Gy reference point enables communication between MATRIXX Charging Application Online Charging System (OCS) and a Policy and Charging Enforcement Function (PCEF).
  - Spending Limit Policy — Sy Sessions
    MATRIXX Charging Application communicates with an external Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) using the Sy interface.
  - Session Management Policy — Gx Sessions
    MATRIXX Engine includes MATRIXX Charging Application, which is a Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF), which communicates with an external Policy and Charging Enforcement Function (PCEF) using the Gx reference point.
    - Session Management Policy Session Communication
      When a policy session is initiated, MATRIXX Engine uses the Diameter Gx Interface to communicate with the PCEF.
    - Rx Application Sessions
      The MATRIXX Policy Application Rx interface gathers data from an external Application Function (AF), and uses it to construct and publish PCC and QoS rules over the Gx interface to an external Policy and Charging Enforcement Function (PCEF).

      - Rx Session Custom Bandwidth
        You can normalize on Rx AAR messages when selecting Gx policy profiles to customize QoS Information values such as bandwidth.
      - Rx Session Specific Actions
        If an Rx session subscribes to Gx changes by including Specific-Action AVP values, and the subscribed Gx data changes, Rx then sends an RAR with the changes. The PCRF then tracks the registered Rx Specific-Action AVP values in the Rx AAR and translates these to the appropriate Gx event triggers in the Event-Trigger AVP to the PCEF, in addition to any associated Event-Triggers provided by the PCC rule provision procedure.
    - Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Forking
      Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) forking attempts to simultaneously connect a device to one of several possible remote endpoints. During a forked SIP session, a connection request is sent to each endpoint indicating that it can accept or reject the incoming call request. For example, a connection request is sent to a phone, tablet, and PC in parallel, connecting to the one that answers first or connecting to voicemail.
  - Policy Session APIs
    The SubMan APIs include session query, session validation, and session delete APIs for charging and policy sessions.
- 3G/4G Policy Configuration
  Policy configuration in My MATRIXX includes both session management and spending limit configuration.
- 3G/4G MATRIXX Policy Failover
  A MATRIXX Policy failover can be due to a hard failure or can be planned.
- Policy Profile Selection
  During policy profile selection, product offers are evaluated in descending order from highest to lowest priority. Policy profiles are collected for Sy and N28 policy counters, Gx command-level QoS, and N40 TIME_LIMIT and VOLUME_LIMIT usage triggers.
- Policy Processing Based on Quota Action
  You can configure a product offer so that Spending Limit Control/Sy policy components and Session Management/Gx components are applied when quota is authorized or denied.
- Spending Limit Policy Counter APIs
  The Sy policy counter APIs include MtxRequestDeviceEvaluatePolicyCounterSet and MtxRequestDeviceQuerySession.
- Diameter AVPs for MATRIXX Policy Application
  MATRIXX Engine supports the Sy and Gx interfaces for policy control.

Rx Session Custom Bandwidth

You can normalize on Rx AAR messages when selecting Gx policy profiles to customize QoS Information values such as bandwidth.

Bandwidth values can be customized and applied to Gx flows based on different combinations of attributes included in the Rx message. To customize Rx session bandwidth, you must answer y to the following questions:

Global:Session:Application:Notify:Enable Rx message normalization (y/n)?
Answer y to enable Gx policy selection determined by the Rx AAR message contents.
Diameter:Do you want to add Diameter AVPs to any packets defined in the Rx application (y/n)?
Answer y to extend Diameter AVP capabilities to the Rx application.
